Researcher Futures: Where Next? Developing a career strategy beyond academia – Clare Jones, University of Nottingham
There is no doubt that there is a very different researcher employment landscape from that of 20 years ago, with most research students gaining employment outside of academia. Findings from the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey show that supervisors are seen by their students as being their main source of careers advice and support. So we are focussing this year’s Update Day on helping supervisors and PGR students together

  • explore the pathways open to research degree graduates
  • introduce techniques and resources that can support further career exploration and decision making
  • recognise potential in skills, experience, attributes and achievements whether the student wants a career in academia or, increasingly commonly, outside it.

The workshop recognises that supervisors are not careers advisers, but rather will offer the opportunity to develop approaches that will enable supervisors to provide support and, importantly, encourage students to take responsibility for their own career. The session will also help students and supervisors develop knowledge of options as well as providing techniques and resources to support formal and informal career development conversations.
